Nominated by: Esther M. GallagherDr. Gertrude A. Barber is truly
deserving of a place of honor in Erie's Hall of Fame. She was a dynamic,
dedicated and caring individual. Dr.
Barber devoted and dedicated her life's work and mission to foster not only an
understanding of children and adults with special needs but through her
determination she was able to provide an educational environment where her
students could grow and meet their potential to the fullest.
In 1952 when Dr. Barber founded the Barber Center she was able to establish a
school where children and adults would be treated with love and compassion. She
surrounded herself with a caring and understanding professional staff. She had
the unique ability to reach out to people in all walks of life. Through her
grace, charm and energy she was able to encourage everyone from statesmen to
factory workers to become partners in helping her achieve her vision to improve
the lives of people with disabilities.
Over the years, the Center has grown to be recognized as a national leader in
the educational field. Today the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber National Institute
continues to provide innovative programs and services for special needs
individuals and their families. The Institute continues to instill Dr. Barber's
mission of providing faith, hope and love to all who enter their doors.
The Erie Community is certainly enriched by Dr. Barber and her tireless work
in providing a voice and an educational path for the children and adults with
special needs.
